There are boards and leadership teams of all shapes and sizes in need of security leadership, and this presents big opportunities for vCSO engagement. Sure, there are new folks right out of college with shiny degrees trying to solve the problem, but they lack experience and have no context to help here. What I am seeing is you—the MSP owner or operator—as their best bet.

Organizations know they need to do something about cybersecurity but have no clue where to turn.

For example, I just got off the phone with the head of the board of a Fortune 500 company.

His dilemma?

He knows the board should be considering security but doesn’t know what to do. The new FTC Safeguards have created new compliance issues for his organization, and this has only added to the pressure.  Even before the Safeguards, he had been watching as organizations similar to his have been devastated by cyberattacks, and he isn’t confident that his isn’t next.

I really wanted to help this guy. He was interested in guidance and open to new ideas and opinions. We spent about an hour on the phone just chatting about security. I probably could have spent an entire day talking about the risks his board should be considering, but neither of us could extend the meeting any longer—it was originally supposed to be a 15-minute meeting!

What did that board member want from me?  A security plan. I wish I had enough time to do this, but I’m focused on helping MSPs communicate these very risks to their clients.

As I ended the call, I realized that right now, our MSP community has an even bigger opportunity than I had initially thought. These aren’t just ripples in the water.  They’re waves of opportunity that are flooding in around you.

Now is the time for your vCSO opportunity. You are desperately needed. If you’re still just focused on basic MSP services, look up.  You’re missing the big picture.
